Dubai is celebrating its another edition of the Dubai Shopping Surprises (DSS) Festival with lots of exciting shows and activities. I have seen an entertaining and extravagant shows in Mall of the Emirates last week, an International Circus team performed breathtaking and amusing acts wearing fancy and colorful costumes in the Galleria area.
The stage is situated in the center of the Galleria under the upper floor walkway bridge, the entire Galleria is under a huge skylight dome giving enough light for a good exposure. A 3 different spectacular presentations will be shown at different timings every weekends and 2 shows during the weekdays (except Mondays) throughout the DSS.
I expected to be a few meters away from the performers so I used 70-200mm lens for this shoot. The show was packed of exciting audience, so I decided to open wide my aperture to create a shallow depth of field to blurred out any distracting crowd on the background. I have mentioned topics on how to shoot subject in focus with a blurred background on my previous blog. Shooting hand held using a 900g camera with a 1.5kg lens gives an intense pain in the arm, I often get numbed, so I rendered the help of my trusted monopod to outlast the whole show.
The performances wowed the audience, specially the trampoline act where the performers straddled their position in mid air with a combination of twist and somersaults. Another breathtaking act is the Rhönrad or the German Wheel where the performer is inside a huge wheel and controls its movement by shifting the center of gravity. Another performer who impressed the crowd was the contortionist, it's really unusual to have this kind of flexibility, a dramatic bending and flexing of a human body. The show gained enthusiastic response, loud applause and whistles echoed in the huge Galleria area after the show.
The bollards around the stage were removed after the presentation, audience can come closer to greet and shoot with the colorful and fancy suited performers. The performance was great, impressive actors, thumbs up for the entertaining show.
